The Paintings of Peter Stolvoort  process

Flow…

Peter Stolvoort taps his spirit’s core to lend his works deep emotion, and memories of moments in time. His transatlantic crossing as a boy, and this metaphor for his life, are the main inspirations for the “flow” series of paintings.

Peter’s unique works begin with a concept layout in an under painting. He premixes all of the colors to establish a cohesive palette. Copious amounts of acrylic paint are directly poured or applied with a custom-cut brush to create layers of color on the canvas. Then, the layers are accented with brush-flung strands, added materials, pallet knife grooves and simple manipulation of the canvas. The energy and movement of this process creates vibrant currents of color, light, and reflection in powerful compositions that flow endlessly over the edges of the canvas.

Salt grass…

The transition between the sea and marsh is the inspiration for Peter’s series of “grass” paintings.  These works celebrate: sea breezes, different heights of the sun, the calls of wading birds, red winged blackbirds, and the soft rustle of salt grass.

Peter first applies an underlying painting of the marsh and sky. Then he premixes fluid acrylic paints to establish an overall palette increasing the intensity and values by adding accents and hues. Using a finely trimmed wide brush, he applies one layer of color at a time, allowing each color to dry before applying the next. This process creates vibrant sculptural representations of the life and movement in the marsh.
